Challenge:

Facing major environmental challenges like deforestation and urbanisation, the Indonesian government set an ambitious goal to map the entire country by 2025, an impressive 126 million parcels in total. Key to the venture was ensuring land registration benefitted the country’s many smallholders and residential landholders.

Purpose
By developing a participative, fit-for-purpose and digital approach to land titling, we demonstrated how the Indonesian government can scale their ambition to map 79 million parcels by 2025.

Solution

Working under very challenging conditions, terrains and social circumstances, Meridia established legal accountability at scale while remaining flexible enough to tap into each community’s specific needs. With support from the Kadaster International and local partners JKPP and Gadjah Mada University, we introduced participatory land documentation projects in Java and Sumatra.

Benefits

By combining high surveying quality with participatory efforts, the pilot proved it was possible to deliver legally valid land documentation at an affordable price.
